Our cause to fight infant mortality is fueled by Madhya's Gift. A children's healthcare fund that, by every extent, goes towards preventing children from succumbing to fatal diseases that will prevent them from living past their 5th birthday. Whether it’s funds or best health care services available and ensuring sick children get the help they need in the shortest amount of time.
Madhya was a refugee child who was diagnosed with Pediatric Leukemia when she first arrived in Malaysia. After waiting 5 months, she got admitted into a government hospital, as private hospitals would not admit her without hefty deposits. As refugees, her parents weren't allowed to work while she was charged at a much higher rate than local children get as hospitals do not honor the standard waivers for refugees. Madhya would have received no treatment at all if it wasn't for help from YCK and other donors. She eventually needed a bone marrow transplant that we couldn't raise enough money for on time but managed to resettle her in Australia to receive less costly medical services and experimental drugs. She died in September 2020, just before her 3rd birthday.
Madhya's story is just one among many others that have suffered the same fate from the consequences of the same system. Mortality rates of children under 5 years of age is increasing with cases of congenital issues, cancer and infectious diseases. Critically ill children who are non Malaysian, have even less access to health services if they are poor, stateless or refugees, only receiving access after paying a deposit many times higher than Malaysian children for the same exact treatment.
If you've ever wondered how to save a life, especially one that's barely lived, here's how. Contributing to a RM 1 Million seed fund, incubated under Yayasan Chow Kit, allowing us to work with clinics, NGOs, doctors and medical staff, providing a one-stop financial support system for marginalized critically ill children to access medical support. This will begin with helping 20 children a month, followed by the reduction of child mortality rates, with the collation of data and testimonies to drive policy change and build a partner coalition of medical providers. All in the same purpose to minimize risks and ensure access to quality health services needed by acutely ill children. This allows for promise from short term aid all the way to long term sustainability. If there was one thing Madhya has gifted to us, to gift to others just like her, it is this. A gift that will live on to be the legacy that allows children to live out their legacies.
